Covid-19 update 31.03.2020
As promised we are continuing to provide regular updates on the situation related to the Covid 19 outbreak and it's impact on our business. As of the date of writing we continue to operate as normal with leadtimes within the normal 10 day window.
In terms of staffing we currently have a small number of employees self isolating for a 14 day period. We obviously wish them and their families a speedy recovery. To date we have been able to shift resources to the busier areas of the business and cover the reduction in staff numbers through overtime where necessary. A number of our material suppliers are beginning to notify us of delays in certain product lines due primarily to unprecedented levels of demand. This has clearly been driven by the large increases in purchases by the general public from the major supermarkets. We believe this is likely to be a spike in demand that will drop away as we move further into the crisis and hope therefore to be able to maintain leadtimes broadly in line with normal busy periods.
We'll continue to provide updates on a regular basis to maintain our communication with our customers and stakeholders alike.
Covid-19 update 24.03.2020
With regard to the escalating outbreak of the Corona Virus and the PM’s announcement last night, we hereby inform our customers and partners that Windmill Tapes Ltd is acting in compliance with the current NHS requirements and local authority guidelines.
As an employer our primary concern is the health and wellbeing of our workforce. As of the date of this notification no employees of our company have tested positive for Corona Virus or have been asked to self isolate. Health surveillance provisions and advice on precautionary measures have been put in place at our premises. All meetings and subcontractor visits are prohibited until further notice. All staff travel has been banned until further notice. All delivery/collection drivers are asked to remain with their vehicles and are not permitted to enter Windmill premises. A number of office staff are working from home but both the tape and label factories remain fully operational.
As of the date of this letter there has been no disruption to the Windmill supply chain. Most of our raw material is imported from the EU and to date there have been no undue delays with delivery or increased lead times from our suppliers. We have a number of options in terms of raw material sources and do not foresee a situation where we are unable to source the materials we need. It is feasible, should the situation worsen, that lead times may increase a little but beyond that at this stage we feel we are well positioned to handle what disruption may occur.
We continue to monitor the situation and take note of government advice as broadcasted.

What we are doing to help with the fight against Covid 19!
These are worrying times for all of us but here at Windmill we are doing what we can to help. We've outlined below the some of things we are doing.
- We're giving priority to orders for labels intended for the NHS, food retailers or essential consumer items like bin liner wraps. We've already produced several urgent hand santizer label orders and a number of urgent orders for bin liner labels to help the urgent re-stocking of supermarket shelves.
- We've been involved in producing urgent tapes orders to enable the retailers to mark out their shop floors to maintain social distancing whilst shopping.
- We've introduced shifts and overtime in the areas it's needed to ensure a prompt response to urgent requests.
We'll keep you abreast as things develop but will continue to do our utmost to help in the battle to beat the virus.

Introducing our Environmentally Friendly Tapes
Like most packaging businesses we are acutely aware of the desire of our customers to reduce waste, reduce plastic and help to increase the amount of recycled packaging passing through our supply chains. For years at Windmill we’ve offered the only 100% recyclable, 100% biodegradable packaging tapes in our gum paper tape ranges. Funnily enough gum paper tapes were the first products we sold when we started back in 1980 and we’ve kept the range going ever since but there’s no question in the last couple of years we’ve seen a noticeable increase in demand for these products.
We haven’t rested on our laurels though and are constantly looking to enhance our environmental credentials and over the last 2-3 years we’ve introduced other environmentally friendly tapes to complement the range such that we know have a full range of plain and printed gum tapes and can offer plain and printed self-adhesive paper tapes. Finally, in the last 6 months we’ve also launched the first self-adhesive paper tape made from 100% recycled paper.
Taking each of these products in turn gum paper tapes are the gold standard when it comes to the environment. Paper is taken from managed forests in Scandinavia and the adhesive is a formulated vegetable glue based on potato starch. As such this range is 100% recyclable and 100% biodegradable leaving a negligible footprint on the environment when compared to plastic self-adhesive tapes more commonly used. We offer these tapes in various weights to cover a range of applications and supply both plain and printed options too. Gum paper tapes require specific dispensing equipment and accepting that not everyone wishes to go this route we also have a range of self-adhesive paper tapes in both plain and printed option where the customer wishes to continue with existing handheld dispensers.
nterestingly whilst these are self-adhesive tapes, they can be claimed to be recyclable if they are applied to a complimentary material such as cardboard and corrugate and they do not exceed 20% of the total weight. This is outlined in EN13430 which defines the requirements for packaging recoverable by material recycling. Lastly, we’ve recently launched a new self-adhesive paper tape made from 100% recycled paper.Again, available in both plain and print this is the first self-adhesive paper tape that is both made from 100% recycled paper and can be claimed to be recyclable too.
So, if you or your clients are looking to enhance their environmental credentials and you genuinely care about the environment do please give us a call or drop us and email so we can explain in greater detail what the options are.
